Berlin is gearing up for a hot Corona protest weekend

Berlin is expected to face a weekend with broad protests against the German corona policy. The city’s administrative court overturned a police ban on Friday and made it clear that a demonstration planned for Saturday with thousands of participants from all over Germany can take place subject to conditions. For Berlin’s Senator for the Interior, Andreas Geisel (SPD) and the police, this is a definite defeat.
The decision for the big rally was not yet legally binding, the police filed a complaint with the Higher Administrative Court. This probably wanted to announce its decision on Friday evening. The organizers of the initiative lateral thinking 711 from Stuttgart, meanwhile, celebrated it as a victory and shouted: “Everyone comes to Berlin”. Numerous other calls are circulating on the Internet, despite a possible ban on traveling to the capital and protesting.
The initiative had registered around 22,000 participants for the rally on Saturday on Strasse des 17. Juni near the Brandenburg Gate. The police expect a similar magnitude. A long demonstration through Berlin-Mitte is planned beforehand. The administrative court also allowed him in a second decision, which was also not yet final. The police assembly authority had banned these major actions and various smaller events on Wednesday.
In the event that the permit remains, the police announced strict conditions for the participants, which would be consistently enforced. 3000 police officers should be ready, 1000 of them come from other federal states and from the federal police. Should the demonstrators fail to adhere to the rules of distance, the security forces would evacuate “very quickly,” said police chief Barbara Slowik. At the same time, the police emphasized that they were always ready to talk.
As a reason for the prohibition order, she had given that the gathering of tens of thousands of people – often without a mask or distance – created too high a health risk for the population. This was already shown by the demonstration against the Corona policy on August 1 in Berlin, during which most of the demonstrators consciously ignored hygiene rules.
The administrative court saw it differently and found that there were no prerequisites for a ban. An imminent danger to public safety cannot be inferred either from the course of the demo on August 1 or from the critical attitude of the participants to the corona policy. The organizers had presented a hygiene concept and made arrangements with 900 files and 100 “de-escalation teams”. Conditions for the demo had not been adequately checked by the country.

The Berlin administrative court has overturned the ban on the demonstration against the corona policy planned for tomorrow in the capital.
The event could take place subject to conditions, said a court spokesman.
The decision is not yet final.
The Berlin Senate had stated that massive violations of the distance requirement and mask requirement were to be expected during the protests.
Despite the ban on demonstrations critical of the government in Berlin, activists continue to mobilize.
One of the best known of them is Heiko Schrang.
The author and YouTuber has almost 180,000 subscribers on his “Schrang TV” channel, and his videos have been clicked millions of times.
Schrang gained particular fame with his protest against the GEZ. He refuses to pay the fees and fights for them in court.

The Berlin administrative court has lifted the ban on the demonstration against the corona policy planned for Saturday. However, there are strict requirements for compliance with the minimum distance, said a court spokesman on Friday. The assembly authority had banned the large demonstration with up to 20,000 expected participants because of infection protection on Wednesday.

Thousands had signed up to attend the rally against coronavirus measures before it was banned by city authorities over health concerns. This decision was later overturned by the city’s administrative court, which allowed the rally to go ahead under the condition that social distancing measures should be respected by participants.
A counter-protest by opposing groups is also expected to take place.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel originally announced a series of measures in March, in order to curb the spread of coronavirus. The measures have been gradually eased nationwide, however in the past weeks the number of new infections has significantly increased.
