Craziest Tornado in Mayfield, Kentucky, USA (Dec 11, 2021). US tornadoes: Homes, businesses, and many lives all gone as Kentucky town devastated by storm. There were multiple tornadoes across six states and one is thought to have travelled for 200 miles at ground level.
More than 30 separate tornadoes moved with devastating power and speed through an area stretching from Mississippi in the south to Illinois in the north. As they swept through the region over several hours, the twisters killed dozens, including workers in a candle factory in a flattened Kentucky town, lakeside vacationers in Tennessee and a nursing home resident in Arkansas.
The 219-mile-long Tri-State Tornado of March 1925 is widely considered to be the longest tornado path. The deadliest tornado in U.S. history, that tornado killed 695 people as it rumbled through Missouri, Illinois and Indiana in the dark of night.

Every December we have a chance to see one of our favorite meteor showers – the Geminids. The shower is currently active until Dec. 17 and will peak on the night of Dec. 13 into the morning of Dec. 14, making those hours the best time for viewing the meteor shower.
The Geminids are caused by debris from a celestial object known as 3200 Phaethon, whose origin is the subject of some debate. Some astronomers consider it to be an extinct comet, based on observations showing some small amount of material leaving Phaethon’s surface. Others argue that it has to be an asteroid because of its orbit and its similarity to the main-belt asteroid Pallas.
Whatever the nature of Phaethon, observations show that the Geminids are denser than meteors belonging to other showers, enabling them to get as low as 29 miles above Earth’s surface before burning up. Meteors belonging to other showers, like the Perseids, burn up much higher.
Of all the debris streams Earth passes through every year, the Geminids’ is by far the most massive. The meteors that streaks across the sky are some of the fastest and brightest among meteor showers, because the Earth is hitting a stream of particles almost head on. Keep in mind that the Geminids are rich in green-colored fireballs.
The Geminids can be seen by most of the world. Yet, it is best viewed by observers in the Northern Hemisphere. The best time to watch this shower will be between the hours of midnight and dawn – regardless of your time zone.

IT IS perhaps the most iconic symbol of life on our planet. The Amazon is the world’s largest and most biodiverse tropical rainforest, and an immense trap for carbon dioxide. The perils of deforestation in this vital resource are old news. But now, the time on the clock is running out. It seems that the world’s biggest rainforest is about to turn into the world’s biggest environmental disaster. “We are about to collapse,” says Luciana Gatti at Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research. “We are in an emergency, we need action now.”
Gatti has spent years observing the Amazon from the air. She believes we are as little as five years from a point of no return, where lush rainforest irreversibly begins to convert into dry savannah. It is also the point at which billions of tonnes of carbon would be dumped into the atmosphere. “It’s a nightmare,” she says.
That nightmare scenario is the infamous Amazon tipping point, where the ecosystem can no longer cope with the damage being inflicted and irreversibly flips into a new stable state. Like a game of Jenga, brick after stabilising brick is removed until the tower collapses in a heap.
Warnings that this is approaching have now taken on extreme urgency. The rate of deforestation has increased sharply and is fast approaching the theoretical limit. An impact event is a collision between astronomical objects causing measurable effects. Impact events have physical consequences and have been found to regularly occur in planetary systems, though the most frequent involve asteroids, comets or meteoroids and have minimal effect. Impact events appear to have played a significant role in the evolution of the Solar System since its formation. Major impact events have significantly shaped Earth’s history, and have been implicated in the formation of the Earth–Moon system, the evolutionary history of life, the origin of water on Earth and several mass extinctions. The prehistoric Chicxulub impact, 66 million years ago, is believed to be the cause of the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event.
An asteroid is a minor planet of the inner Solar System. Historically, these terms have been applied to any astronomical object orbiting the Sun that did not resolve into a disc in a telescope and was not observed to have characteristics of an active comet such as a tail. As minor planets in the outer Solar System were discovered that were found to have volatile-rich surfaces similar to comets, these came to be distinguished from the objects found in the main asteroid belt. Thus the term “asteroid” now generally refers to the minor planets of the inner Solar System, including those co-orbital with Jupiter. Larger asteroids are often called planetoids.

Boris Johnson has announced that the government is launching an emergency booster campaign to avoid a severe rise in hospitalisations and deaths from a ‘tidal wave’ of Omicron. The prime minister said infections of the Covid-19 variant, first identified in South Africa, were doubling every two to three days, and that two doses of vaccine ‘are simply not enough to give the level of protection we all need’.
Speaking in a televised address on Sunday night, Johnson announced the booster programme would be offered to everyone over the age of 18 in the UK, with extra capacity provided by ‘additional vaccine sites and mobile units’ and ’42 military planning teams across every health region’.
