Authority and power are from the Great Spirit Creator and your own language and NOT Government hive mind or fear of not fitting in to civilization.

This is, to some extent, in sync with the more general idea of native identity …

Years ago in Glastonbury, someone had organised a POW-WOW with a large group of native American Indians in a primary school at the weekend. They performed this whole dance and then were selling crafts and things on tables. I had borrowed my friend Gillian’s big chunky zip jumper and as I stood at one of the stalls, the Indian looked straight at me and asked “You have that on your jumper – do you know who that is?” He seemed to say it with great force and revereance. I have to say, I didn’t know who it was – but I didn’t want to disappoint him – so I just nodded vigorously, as if to say “I sure do!”.
It was a large bird with its wings outstretched, across the chest and heart. I just liked the jumper. I think it was the Great Spirit.
It was good Pow-Wow though!

Look up Thunderbird. It may explain the reverence. They are very Sacred.

CnC, you made me chuckle about the direct way you were spoken to. The Elders are often that way with serious subjects. It can be a bit intimidating until you get used to it but I think Elders in any Indigenous area are that way. They have seen and deal with alot over time.

Yes it was funny because I literally had no idea what he was talking about, but I knew it must be really important because of the dead serious tone he asked me, so I just played along – not wanting to disappoint, however it was done out of respect to him/ them – as I knew I was just a clueless dimwit bopping around the stalls on a Saturday afternoon. And they were bringing thousands of years of ancient knowledge with them! Yes thanks :)) I will look up Thunderbird for sure!
